As well as being a hugely important resource for Black family history and for comprehending some of the traumas with which enslaved people had to cope, To Be Sold provides the direct basis for much fuller understandings of the business interconnections of the ‘Second Middle Passage,’ the sheer scale of sales (including major new evidence on local and private non-trader sales), and the nature of the white society in which enslavers, traders, and other buyers and sellers lived.
